Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' is a small, deciduous tree or shrub that grows to about seven to twelve feet tall, and is about four to eight feet wide. It is hardy in USDA Zones 5 - 8. It may be planted in full sun or part shade. Given the heat of our summers, it is best planted in part shade.

'Butterfly' is in the Palmatum Group. It has small leaves that vary in shape, but are typically five-lobed. The blue-green leaves generally have a white or creamy margin, but there may be some leaves that are entirely white or cream colored. Pink markings border the white margin in the spring, and in the fall the white margin becomes magenta in color.
